Andries Engelbrecht, H Dip Med Tech (Clinical Pathology)

Senior Associate, HVTN Lab Operations

Andries joined CHIL in April 2015 after spending 7 years working with International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM). His last 3 years were spent as a Quality Manager and Compliance Specialist, where he was responsible for quality monitoring, review of laboratory data and resolution of corrective actions in a large scale phase III HIV prevention efficacy trial. In his first four years at IPM he was a Laboratory Project Manager, which involved setting up of small on-site laboratories. He was involved in multiple safety and HIV incidence studies throughout Africa (South Africa, Rwanda, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Uganda). 

Prior to moving to IPM, Andries worked in South African National Accreditation System (SANAS)-accredited NHLS Clinical Laboratories; in 2007 and 2008 as a functional auditor, setting up and conducting lab audits for all the NHLS laboratories in the Western Cape. Before that, his position was as Chief Medical Technologist at the Green Point Laboratories Cape Town, where he was responsible for all aspects leading to the smooth functioning of a diagnostic 24-hour chemistry laboratory service. In his current position at CHIL as the Southern Africa Lead Clinical Laboratory Operations Quality Assurance Associate, he oversees the South African team, monitors and provides support for the local labs used by the Southern African HVTN clinical sites to test novel HIV vaccines.
